Who Can Prescribe?
Allied Health Professionals from Internal Services (Disability and Domiciliary Care Services, Novita and Minda Inc), as well as from Hospitals, Non-Government Organisations, Country Health and Private Practices can prescribe for eligible clients. Registered Nurses from DCSI can prescribe some equipment for clients who reside in DCSI Accommodation Services.
Disability and Domiciliary Care Services (including, Child and Youth Services, ASSIST and Domiciliary Care), Novita and Minda Inc are considered to be primary agencies for clients of the DCSI Equipment Program. Allied health professionals from these services are regarded as internal prescribers and can send paperwork directly to Domiciliary Equipment Service (DES), once necessary approvals have been gained.
DCSI nurses are also approved to prescribe some items of equipment for their clients, however all paperwork is sent via ASSIST.
The registration process for the DCSI Equipment Program is outlined on the Becoming a Prescriber page. This is only relevant to DCSI, Novita and Minda Inc staff.
In order to maximise access for clients and facilitate discharge planning, allied health professionals in agencies other than DSCI, Novita and Minda Inc can prescribe equipment and home modifications on behalf of their clients seeking to access the DCSI Equipment Program.
Prescription forms and other supporting documentation from external prescribers need to be sent via the client's primary agency. After the internal service has checked all approvals are in place, the prescription form is sent to DES for processing.

What Can be Prescribed?
In Scope Lists are the lists of equipment or home modification types that the Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) Equipment Program has endorsed for supply when a client meets the Program's eligibility criteria. The lists include information on prescriber requirements, if delegate sign-off is required, and if any additional criteria and screening tools apply.
The Equipment Item Types and Definitions (XLS 80.5 KB) document provides a consolidated list of the equipment with definitions of each item.
Each equipment and home modification type on the In Scope List lists relevant documents that support the prescription process.
Selecting Equipment or Home Modifications
Selecting the most suitable item with the right measurements, features and accessories can sometimes be difficult. A number of information sheets have been developed to support prescribers in the assessment and prescription of equipment and home modifications. Find further information on the assistive technology selection page.
